First Semester Reflection
This semester I learned that graphic design is not an easy job or class. Graphic Design takes time to master, and if someone wants to do this as a career it takes time and patience. There are so many terms and tools to know, and remember to do well in this industry.
Review Week 17
Have you learned something?
I learned how to identify typefaces and fonts. I also learned that serifs are basically the curly things at the ends of letters. Serifs come from ancient Rome. Roman stone carvers would first paint on the letters and then carve out the letter, including the flares at the end of strokes. This created the serif. There are two main serifs; they are Adnate and Abrupt. Adnate though, is more organic than Abrupt. Abrupt "is squarer and more rigid, and doesn’t flow into the base letterform," according to ilovetypeography.com.

Review Week 8
Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition? So it is balanced out and certain details stand out,
Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers? So graphic designers can use the right colors for there designs.
Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition.
Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object? We see what color stands out most. If there is a direct object the designer wants to point out, they usually use a bright, eye catching color.

Podcast #3 Principles of Design
Define principles of design?
Concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition.
What do the principles of design affect?
affects the expressive content, the message, or the work.
What is the principle of repetition?
repeating some aspect or element of the design throughout the entire document
Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience? Bold font, thick lining, certain bullet, color, design element, particular format, and spatial relationship.
What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs? Bold font, thick lining, certain bullet, color, design element, particular format, and spatial relationship.
What should you avoid when working with repetition? Repeting to much that it gets annoying or overwhelming.
What is the principle of proportion/scale? The realative size and scale of various elements in a design.
What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size? The Human Body
How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter? They are usually there to be unexpected or unusual.
What is the principle of balance? The distribution of heavy and light elements on the page.
Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater? Irregular shapes bear greater weight than regular shapes.
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal balance
Define symmetrical balance? This occurs when the weight of a compositon is evenly distributed around a central, vertical, or horizontal axis.
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
Define asymmetrical balance? Occurs when the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around the axis.
What is the principle of emphasis? Stressing a particular area of focus rather than the maze of details of equal importance.
What happens to a design that has no focus? It can make the page jumbled and have no meaning.
What is a focal point and how is it created? Focal point is the area where the eye goes to first.
How many components of a composition can be a focal point? One
What ways can emphasis be created in a design? It may be the largest, brightest, darkest, or most complex.
What is the principle of unity? Wholenesscomposition.
What three ways can unity be obtained?
1. Put objects close to one another.
2. Make things similar (similar textures, colors, or shapes)
3. Direct vision of a line.
What is the principle of variety?
What ways can a designer add variety to a design?
Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety?

What is another name for figure?
What is ground?
What is another name for ground?
When a composition is abstract (has no recognizable subject) what will the figure depend on? What does that mean?
Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole?

How is rhythm achieved?
What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1.
2.
3.
How does rhythm help a composition/design?

Review Week 5
Line:
This Poster Design has a great use of line work. The flow of the lines shows the power and strength of a Nike athlete. It also shows speed, agility, and endurance to me. Without the lines it would lack purpose and meaning.
Space:
This poster design shows space being used to grab the persons attention. When I first saw this the purple and blue colors got my attention, then the man, and then the fly object he is looking at. Whoever designed this piece used their space wisely and used all of it well.
Value:
Value is shown in this poster design. The red shows love, hope, and also grabs your attention immediately. This design has a purpose.
Texture:
Mercedes Benz is known for there amazing and detailed poster designs . In this advertisement, for the G550, class the texture in the back ground, and on on the ground is superb. The texture in this design helps sell these cars and make them look better.
shape:
Shape is used in this poster design. You notice the use of shape in the sun, the kite trees, the shape of the book, etc. Not only does the color catch your eye but if you notice all the great use of shape, it really brings out the design.
